Chapter 22

Anchorman walked into the overgrown space in front of the cabin. Moving to the side of the structure, he gave an all-clear signal to the others waiting in the trees behind the dilapidated structure. Ricki was the first to join him, her rifle ready to be raised to her shoulder at a moment’s notice.

“No sign of them?” she asked.

He shook his head. “No. Clay and I went out a hundred feet, all the way around. They’re gone.” He looked over at her. “It’s probably like Gin said, they didn’t want to get tangled up with federal agents. Best guess? They’re headed back toward Canada.”

Ricki sincerely hoped so as she strode over to the porch steps. The door was hanging on one hinge, its lopsided angle blocking the entrance. As Gin crossed the porch to stand behind her, Ricki pushed the door aside and stepped into the cabin.

Half the floor was gone. The boards had been ripped out and tossed into a pile in the corner. The canned goods were lying all over what remained of the floor, with some scattered across the exposed dirt underneath, and the rickety box next to the bed frame had been smashed to pieces. The space was small, so the destruction wouldn’t have taken long, but it was thorough.

Gin looked around and shook her head. “Well, I guess they were either looking for something or really didn’t like the owner.”

“Both, I think.” Ricki stared at the gaping hole in the floor, wondering if their attackers had found the missing drugs. Or if the run-down cabin did indeed belong to the elusive hermit who’d taken all the drugs and had stashed them somewhere else. Since neither answer was going to jump out and present itself, she considered a way to find out.

She took off her day pack and set it on the ground, unzipped the top, and rummaged around for some paper and a pencil. Squatting down, she used her pack as a makeshift desk and quickly scrawled out a note. After righting the table, which was miraculously still intact, Ricki used one of the food cans to anchor the note on top of it. She then slung her pack over one shoulder and gave Gin a small push to get her back out the door. Right now the note was the best she could do, and they had bigger problems—like getting out of the park in one piece.

She and Gin rejoined the others and the team once again fell into their line, following the trail in absolute silence. When they reached the point where the two small trails crossed each other, Ricki sent word up the line for Anchorman to stop.

She made her way forward, carefully examining the small trail to the north and then to the south. Nodding in satisfaction, she took the lead as Anchorman dropped to the back with Clay. Ricki walked past the point where they could have turned west and retraced their route to the original crime scene and then taken the now very familiar cross-country hike to their campsite at Egg Lake.
